Poetry in Motion: A Poetry Book Club and Class

  • The Cranford Community Center 220 Walnut Avenue Cranford, NJ, 07016 United States (map)

If you’re interested in poetry of any kind and from any era, this is the club for you!

The first half of the meeting will be a brief, informal class highlighting the history of poetry along with some of its major types and techniques. The second half will be in the style of a book club, with poems that we will discuss and interpret together as a group.

In this session, we will be focusing on beat and spoken word poetry (yes, this includes slam poetry!). Please select a poem in this category you'd like to share for discussion (not required to attend, but highly encouraged). Since the emphasis is on the spoken aspect, if you can find video or audio of the poem being performed, please feel free to inform us ahead of time either by email or by contacting the library so that I can have it ready to go. Otherwise, you are certainly welcome to recite it yourself, but just make sure that the poem was originally conceived as a spoken word piece.

This is a sensory-friendly event and will therefore have a limited number of tickets available.
